On the first half of January 2020, we held a two-week summer course of genomic informatics entitled “Introduction to Microbial Genomic and Metagenomic Analyses” at University of La Frontera (UFRO). Prof. Andrés Ávila (UFRO) and Dr. Mikihiko Kawai (Kyoto University) of this project collaborated to create a program and organized the course. Lecturers were Prof. Ávila, Assistant Professor So Fujiyoshi (Kyoto University), Assistant Professor Michel Abanto (UFRO), Dr. Kawai, and Giovanni Larama (UFRO), who in total provided a comprehensive course covering basic topics ranging from biology to informatics as well as practical content of microbial genomics.

This summer course was carried out as a UFRO graduate course subject, with the supports by both biology-oriented institute BIOREN (Scientific and Technological Bioresource Nucleus) and informatics-oriented center CEMCC (Center for Modeling and Computational Science). We thank Dr. Mónica Rubilar Días, postgraduate academic director of UFRO, and other members who helped us to carry out the course. We also thank Raphael Verdugo (technical staff of CEMCC) who performed various settings required to enable demonstrations and practical training using the research server “Soroban” of this MACH project.

We will continue to plan and develop such training programs to enhance researches of UFRO and others in the field of genomics.
